Her passion for educational reform and school choice, in particular, is well known. In a recent interview, Betsy discussed school choice, the progress and how she first became involved in the movement. Milton Friedman, the famous American economist, first proposed school choice over 50 years ago and the 25th anniversary of the first school voucher program in Milwaukee is upon us. Betsy is jubilant with the progress made over these past few years. Reporting there are now over 250,000 students participating in some form of private choice programs in 17 states and the District of Columbia. The movement is growing quickly, with the addition of 40,000 students in the last year alone, new programs are available in several states, including Florida, Louisiana, Ohio, and several others. Recent polling conducted in five states showed educational choice is very well received especially among Latinos.
Betsy DeVos has been interested in school choice for many years; no single incident attracted her to the idea of providing school choice to everyone, it was more a matter of several little things. Perhaps the defining moment came when she and her husband started to enroll their school-age children in the Potter’s House Christian School in Grands Rapids, Michigan. On return visits, they met and became friends with several other parents who also had children attending the school. They were concerned about how many of these families were struggling to keep their children in the same environment they were fortunate enough to afford easily. Soon they were helping certain students at the school, and this support grew into a bigger commitment, today they are heavily involved in support of the students at the school. There is much more to say about this dedicated woman and her devotion to providing the best possible education to the youth of America.
