Dick and Betsy DeVos are known for their philanthropy. Despite the scrutiny they receive, Betsy and Dick DeVos’ total political contributions are still significantly less compared to their charitable giving. The couple is raising the curtain on their millions in philanthropic giving.
In 2015, the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation distributed over $11.6 million in charitable contributions. That is more than five times the amount that Betsy reported to the government when she was vetted for her cabinet post. Dick and Betsy are part of a wealthy political family that has been known for its charitable giving. That same year, the family gave away $104 million to charity. Forbes estimated that the extended DeVos family’s lifetime giving is about a quarter of their entire wealth.

Born into a wealthy family in 1958, Betsy DeVos grew up in a church in Holland, Michigan. She went on to study at a college in nearby Grand Rapids before marrying Dick DeVos. Dick and Betsy DeVos have been married for over 30 years. They have four grown children and have contributed to various political and religious groups.
Betsy DeVos has pushed for the expansion of charter schools and the use of private school vouchers. In 2015, Betsy and Dick gave over $3 million to educational organizations. They also gave $357,000 to support organizations that promote education reform. During an interview, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said the country’s current system was not meeting the American dream. She said it was a matter of civic duty.
